Hi! Nigel.
My experiences with a 13amp hour STARTER BATTERY to date are inadequate when
fitted at the rear of the baggage bay. I fitted firstly an isolator solenoid
of 30 amp continuous and 60 amp intermittent rating, now a 60 amp continuos
and 100 amp intermittent, but neither the 13amp hour battery or a used 28amp
hour battery will handle the 1KW starter on the 3300Jabiru.
Put a jump battery or even two 13amp hour batteries in parallel it whizzes
over. But of course the six cylinders don't give any period of less demand
because there is always one pot coming onto compression. I forget what size
the cables are but not the smallest , I think No.2 gauge. I am seriously
considering moving the whole set up back to the front even with the
possibility of needing rearward ballast because of the heavy MT Propeller!
When I've completed more trials I'll report because Europa have lent me a
brand new 28 amp hour battery to try it, but lets face it making judgements
on optimum condition batteries doesn't look too good for future margin. The
best option I can see at present is to keep the cables as short as possible.
When you look at most other machinery the starter is local to the battery
not about 5 feet away.

installed. It's a bit late to choose the layout when doing the weight and
balance checks. <

I am leaving final battery fitting until after the weight and balance
checks. I have included battery cable to the rear of the baggage bulkhead
(Europa Classic) so that even in the event of a forward mounted battery I
have an external power point well away from the prop.
