Hi! Nigel.
I guess you must be a "mile high club member"? I don't quite class myself as
geriatric yet but the point is that it isn't possible to see the meniscus
---From above and I defy even you to get your head /eyes horizontal to the top
of the tunnel from the P1 position.
Duncans suggestion of a cork may just be the answer so long as it doesn't
bugger off with an air bubble and stay out of sight. I tried the red ball
out of a battery tester but it sank in Avgas like a lead brick !
My transducer system of Tony K's is working fine and I have it calibrated
(with difficulty) to cater for the Long Range Tank as well as the main tank.
However it doesn't give an actual fuel sighting so I must confess I'm
always filling full to start over, which isn't a major problem flying long
flights always.

You could fit LED/photo-detectors across the sight tube to detect the fuel
level at set points like Full, 1/2 Full and the Reserve threshold.
Slave these to small bright LEDs on the instrument panel and you'll still be
able know your fuel contents when your spine becomes non-flexible and you
become geriatric ......though by that time you probably won't remember why
they are flashing!
