You need to be careful of the principles used for finding "level" - some
model helicopters use a set of photocells, and aim to maintain an attitude
that equalises the light from all directions. Not too clever if you are
flying near a mountain or a cloud, although it might steer you away from
high ground and dark clouds...

Isn't that pretty much what the Navaid autopilot does?  This is also
done 
in the model helicopter market to help keep the models under control.
