Yes that is a good point. There is a lot of metal back there.
I am involved in major MOD (to special missions configuration) of a number of
aircraft.
They range from UAV types up to Global Express 6000. One of the interesting
aspects for me (being predominantly a structures/stress guy) is the
extraordinary
efforts gone to by the systems/avionics guys to minimise interference
(or maximise performance) of all the clever electronics.
Their kit is different but the problems are similar (and more expensive to fix).
Compliance to regulatory and client specific requirements is mandatory. The
EMC and EMI studies are therefore very necessary - but utilise software and
test equipment that we could also apply to our aeroplanes (which are rapidly
becoming
way more complex than recent airliners and military aircraft).
