Alan,
I experienced something similar, but it was not the tank splitting.  Have 
you checked the short sleeves over the tank exit stubs?  Mine developed a 
significant leak owing to fuel degradation of the rubber and had to be 
replaced.  OK after that.  I hope yours is something similar.
