Hello Fred Fillinger

Thanks for the info. ((the pump is 3A for planning purposes).

Do you know gross amp draw when you are starting?

True NiMhs do discharge over time, but you can peak charge a 2 or 3 month
stored battery before you complete runup, better yet do it at home or on way to
airport. Good procedure calls for a c/10 for 15 hours once in a while to
maintain balance. Small enough to live in handheld radio/GPS Flight bag, and of
course power these as well.

If all it is you want to run is 3 amps, then Lithium Ion would be the way to
go. Capacity for weight is great. You can not fast charge them though, and self
discharge curve is plenty good.

In addition to using as backup power for fuel pump, I want to use it as
starting assist. This rules out alkalines, Lithium ions (but maby not for
long!) and smaller Lead Acid batteries.

I never ran D sized alkalines at 3 amps, but for sure they will not tolerate a
6 amp load whid i did once attempt. I would test them on the bench, be sure to
try them when they are as cool as it may get in cockpit. Perhaps you may need
to parallel 2 packs.

Iry tdea with small NiMhs, is you peak them on way to airport, it uses 12 volt
input for charging, or peak at home from a 12 volt power supply. If you use as
a starting assist, wait till they are cool and repeak in aeroplane @ 1C.

BTW, does anyone use battery tender for Lead Acid when Aeroplane sits?
