Geraint,

1.I'm with the others on this - use a bolt.

2. Forget the fiddling and the turnbuckles, here's the easy way:

Attach the rear of the wires to the plastic bits as instructed.

Attach the front ends of the wires to TP18 with the swages in place but
don't swage them up yet.

Using bulldog clamps (small U bolts available from your hardware store),
secure the wires' forward ends to the lugs on TP18 so that they can be
adjusted by pulling them through. (Fit the bulldog clips rear of and clear
of the loose swages) Apply a nominal and equal tension to both wires then
tighten the clamps.

Remove the lower retaining bolt of TP18 and swing it up through about 40
degrees.

By exploiting the difference in rotation centres between TP18 and the
wires' rear attachments, you can now apply tension by simply lowering TP18.

If the arm swings to one side, raise it to loosen the wire, adjust the
proper wire, then lower again to check.

Using this technique you can have all the tension you need, and set each
wire to precisely equal tensions. (Mine's tuned to C sharp, but you can
use D if you're a Bach fan).

When all's set, squeeze up the swages and remove the bulldog clamps.

Be careful not to overdo the tension - it may be possible to bend the
tailplane toque tube. Check it's free before final swaging.
