Most of the corrosion in the flap drive tube is from condensation. With gr
ease on the flap pins and the tight fit of the bearings, no water from rain
or tie down should get into the tube. If in a cold, wet, place, with no c
orrosion control on the inside of the flap tube, a fine rust scale will nor
mally form on the chrome moly as in any stick and tube aircraft.

My tubes were filled with linseed oil as a film like the old timers did. O
K so far, no serious corrosion but I do think a simple drain hole in the be
nd is a good idea.

If you have no treatment, Corrosion X or ACP50 in a =BC inch tube played in
to the cross tube through the bearing hole and sprayed around with a bit of
air pressure to coat the inside should work with the tube in place. Then
for the purist, hook a vacuum source and pull out any excess fluid and it s
hould soldier on for many years. Most scrap plastic brake line tubing is f
lexible enough to do the job and even go down into the bend from each side.

I never tried it, but I think I=92ll give it a go on 96EG (one of the early
Classics) to see how it works.

Good point!
Drill a small hole in the bottom? Thoughts?
Thx,
Pete

When I was building I wondered about that - in fact like you I still do. I
filled the tube up with anti corrosive paint to ensure complete coating (p
ouring out the excess). Every time I have the wings off I squirt with LPS.
But even so there is the U bend where water can accumulate.

Hi Group

Curious, has anyone had a corrosion problem on the flap cross tube in the U
bend that goes under the pitch push rod?

Thx. Ron P.
