As primitive as it sounds, if you want to spray "thick" liquids I suggest you try an electric airless gun They are quite cheap give an ok finish for priming, and will spray stuff like rubber latex and spray putty With no problems, sure they are a bit noisy but could be a good compromise over the roller.
