Been there, done that. The result was better but still not as good as I
would like.

First strip the unit down into its basic components and clear out all of the
polishing debris out and off all of the components. Locate the PTFE disc
that retains the seal and carefully with 400 wet and dry pare down the edge
to take approx 1mm off the Dia. Then clean all of the components and soak
them in dot 5 silicone brake fluid.
The cylinders should recover as required but only if the brake system is
installed,filled and bleed.
