I agree that it is virtually impossible to land without the flaps down but a bit
more possible to do so without the gear being properly locked. My excellent
PFA coach encouraged me to use a final approach check before radioing Finals,
and I have adopted 'PUFF' - Prop fully fine; Undercarriage/Flaps down and
LOCKED;
Fuel pump on. This gives me a greater feeling of security than a switch warning
system and I speak as someone who managed in his youth to fly 106km for
an O/R silver distance in a glider with the gear down and then carefully raise
it before doing an otherwise immaculate landing bang in front of the club house!
