Nigel is presumably referring to the COM antenna, which should definitely be
vertical.  It's hard to beat the location in the tail (as recommended by
Europa), if you want a full-size half-wave dipole.  Bob Archer makes some
folded antennas that can fit into smaller spaces, but offer no performance
advantages.  VOR and glideslope antennas should be horizontal, and can be
mounted either in the wings or in the fuselage.
