There is a DIY kit designed for petrol engines, widely available *  from
Velleman  
Circuit board is 80x 60mm with 2 x 1/2" high red digits, complete with
debouncing circuit, 10-15v unstabilised. Clear, easy assembly instructions,
layout and circuit too.
