Dear Troy,

The tailplane torque tube is effectively a spar and the reason the holes are 
horizontal
is because the neutral axis is on the horizontal. The worst place, strength
wise, to put holes would be in the vertical.

One reason pins were used is to avoid the possibility of the tube being 
squeezed.
This would be undesirable as, at the very least, you could suffer from binding
in the bearings.

Another reason is that you won=27t find an AN bolt of the correct diameter and
tolerance at the correct price.

Has anyone used AN bolts to secure the drive plates and pitch controls to the
torque tube instead of the pins with cotter pins hidden back? And why are they
horizontal instead of vertical just in case a cotter pin were to break? It
