Terminal C is the control terminal.Battery voltage is sensed and
charging_regulated accordingly.C must be connected to battery when engine
is running, and disconnected when master switch is off,or battery will
 discharge slowly.

Can a LED + diode + resistor be used in place of a lamp? Is a zener needed in
series to avoid illumination due to the cyclical nature of the L output? What
is the nature of the output from L?

I would prefer a LED since they are more reliable and easier to mount. It's
tough to reason through things like this given the minimal information in the
Rotax and Europa manuals.
