In a message dated 22/08/97 08:47:51, you write:

<< The factory would not be very happy with using the starboard side as the
 Main for two reasons:-

 1. It would be possible, if the reserve fuel had been used and only a
small quantity of fuel subsequently added, for there to be no fuel in the
reserve side - not a desirable state of affairs.

 2. By having the reserve on the starboard side, the fuel is refreshed
every time the tank is filled.

I would suggest it is not a desirable state of affaris to use the reserve at
all, and there seems little point in just loading fuel up to the tunnel top -
it's less than a 1/6 th full if you aren't intending to use the reserve.

But having now fully tested and calibrated the p-gauge I am disappointerd to
find that although it works beautifully up to full tank capacity there is a
dangerous feature if you overfill i.e. load fuel up the inlet hose. In this
condition you must not release the cap in the lowered condition to establish
the column in the tube , as the top of it can be lower than the head in the
filler tube.

Even just below the full condition, sloshing can send fuel out of the top
when the cap is opened, though you will not usually need to measure the level
till further into a flight. Indeed you can even calibrate for what's in the
hose, but the only way to make the system foolproof is to use a tap instead
of the cap, and connect onwards to the old sight gauge vent. No only is this
an encumbrance, but I suspect it would re-introduce some of the present sight
gauge's odd performance.
