Hi Dave

Check out our album:
"COOL THAT ROTAX 914":
http://www.europaowners.org/main.php?g2_itemId=86934

I have a Mono with 914. Not flying yet. My partner and I have quite a bit of
experience
fooling with Flying Wing Electric Powered RC models and that technology
and knowledge is being implemented to help with cooling and heating of our
914.
First off a computer fan isn't going to do much as far as moving much air. If
you
plan on running air through the radiator, you need some serious pitch speed,
most auto fans are not up to the task, they move a lot of air but too slowly.
I'm going to use three fans. On our album at the moment I have brushed motors,
but may switch over to brush less for the radiator fan.
I don't think anyone complains much about cooling if they leave the top of the
cowl off when on the ground. I'll be using long can speed 400 motors aimed at
the gills on each side. They move quite a lot of air. On low speed, could cool
things after you shut down
As far as water radiator, somehow once flying and in cruise, you don't want to
block off air flow with a windmilling fan with low pitch. Thus I'm going to use
a folding high pitch propeller. About quarter size when folded. It really moves
air nicely through the radiator. I also am incorporating reverse for the prop.
You see with a high camber wing, it's usually a pretty poor performer when
you fly upside down. Well if you want a really bad performer, try flying a high
camber wing upside down and backwards! When in reverse, that's exactly what
I will be doing. I have a pretty high performance fiberglass covered foam flying
wing slope soaring RC. When it's blowing soarable, can't get it out of the
sky. With a flying wing when you change something to add drag, it usually
pitches
you one way or the other. Anything that is easy to do wasn't very effective.
Except having a small motor with folding prop and putting it into reverse!
Dang, makes terrible noises from the awful things being done to the clean
laminar
airflow, but it in fact allows pointing the nose down at a 45 degree angle
and not over-speed! We tested deploying folding prop in reverse hanging out
the sunroof of my Volvo Station Wagon at 80mph, a little over off on the
throttle
and the folder is fully deployed.
What does this have to do with my Europa? For not many amps, I can run in
reverse
and constipate any excess airflow through the radiator I don't want. For one
when things are over-cooling in cooler weather, but it would be very "kool"
if for a few amps I can increase cruise by decreasing cooling drag.
