Thanks for the reply, Terry.
I intend to purchase a thermocouple or two so that I can monitor the 
temperature in the vicinity of the regulator with the gills open and then 
with them taped over, on the same day, to see what happens.  If the gills 
appear to be effective, I will still consider blanking them off but 
replacing the stbd one with a small nacca inlet directed at the regulator.
