I welded a countersunk bolt into a small metal plate, used that as a tap
to rethread the plastic 'nut', then pop riveted it into place on the
flap to replace the original peg. Takes a lot more turns to open or
close it now but so far it seems OK.

You say that you managed to fix the broken threads, but didn't tell us
how you did it.
Mine also broke shortly after installation.
