I have read that the little reg's for the 2-strokes use SCR's, maybe
even in a shunt circuit that's causing alarm here.  However, for the
912/914, dissipating some derated figure more than 250 watts across an
SCR isn't the only regulator design option, if such an SCR were cheap
and would physically fit inside the heat sink.

Are these regulators failing in service?  Do they get really hot "no
load?"
