Bob, Have been following your tribulations with the PFA on your engine
mount. There are at present two of us here in Melbourne who have gone firm
on the Jabiru 3300 engine, and the other guy, Arthur Stubbs has already got
his engine mount kit - everything except the engine itself. The other day I
had a good look at his engine mount.
We now have in Australia an Experimental category a la USA, which means we
can do anything we llike provided we accept total responsibility for it.
But it can result in severe restrictions being placed on ones flying
activities for as fair number of hours after construction if you cant
demonstrate adequacy. This will result in better aircraft than our
equivalent of PFA approvals, known as CAR 101.28, as under that system which
we have had for years, but which is now going out of fashion very fast, if
we want to make any mod at all to the classic Europa we have to jump through
very tight hoops, and I have an XS! During construction under Experimental,
it is wise to have as much experienced input as possible, and record all
such visits, plus photos etc, so that at final inspection (the only
compulsory one) you can demonstrate that you have done a good job. If you
cant you can have nasty restrictions placed on your flying in your pride and
joy.
What all this is leading up to is to ask you if you can summarise for us
what problems PFA have with the Jabiru engine mount, are they warranted, and
if so should we be incorporating any of their ideas in our mount? Bearing
in mind that we are building monowheels. I am sending this to you direct,
but if you feel it would help others, please post my email and your response
on the Europa BB.
Look forward to hearing from you, and good luck with getting airborne. I
may be in UK around Christmas, and if so will make every effort to get to
see your machine.
With kind regards,
Nigel H-B, #423
