my GPS antenna is mounted on a removable base between the door sills
and performs perfectly. Thus no need to cut the outside skin at all.

The base plate is made from Carbon Fibre and covered with clear epoxy
to serve as finished headliner. It can be easily removed. It has no structural
service.

I wouldn't think that if the antenna were situated somewhere in the rear
fuselage you'd have any problems. Aviation type GPS antennas are
active antennas and work even in weak locations - while an aeroplane
usually is in a perfect position to receive multiple sats.

Thus you could also consider to laminate a baseplate into the upper
fuselage half and mount the antenna onto it. Fibreglass is virtually
transparent to SHF frequencies.

Happy building,

<Thomas, kit # 81>
