Fred,
Yip - I've seen some strange effects too. A British microlight manufacturer
once put a steel strip inside the bottom bar for a safety back up. Every
time the pilot pushed out on the bar, (ie. slowed up) the compass would
swing 40 degrees.
Other things to watch (I'm sure you know this already) are spare headsets
dangling about, and meters (all electric meters contain magnets).
