I tried a 9" CRT in the Europa panel last year. I didn't even think of
asking for approval because of implosion risk, and anyway I was terrified of
handling it during installation. Weight is high and screening is required to
suppress the radiation from the deliberately fast edges of the current driving
the line timebase coils.

As for recessing a flat screen, the problem is that the further away it goes
---From the eyeball, the less information can be resolved. Zoom is of limited
use when you want to see your situation picture on a map. Also having to view
LCD screens at right angles because of their polar pattern, means that you
still see light scattered from face and clothing, as by definition, filter
screens cannot be fully absorbing. Carrying a collapsible frangible hood
about 7" deep in combination with an overhead film on the plexiglass has
helped quite a bit. It is tapered towards the eye in order not to intercept
any view of instruments or switches surrounding the screen. Anything deeper
(18" ?) would be like a looking into a submarine periscope !
