Gernot Swetz is now happily flying his very smart Europa, G-SSGS, (Stephie and
Gernot). He asked me to post a message about a problem he had with his ASI, a
new one supplied with Europa speed limitation bands marked on the face of the
instrument with adhesive tape. On a hot day, one of the tapes curled up and
fouled the needle which stuck at 45 kts. The subsequent circuit and landing had
to be completed without it's guidance. Something else to watch out for.
If this or similar ASI problem happens, like not connecting the pitot ?:-( ,
trim the aircraft carefully and fly by feel. Not too difficult, but just
remember, whatever it is that's gone wrong, FIRST FLY THE AIRPLANE then try and
sort out the problem.
