Gidday,
I would like some advice on "when is the right time to discard hardener that
appears to have darkened in colour, and gives off quite an odour (mind you,
it may always give off this smell). My hardener in my resin pump has only
been transferred from the bottle for about 6 weeks, and I have preheated my
resin cupboard to between 20-25 Degrees for only the last fortnight for
layup purposes. I have been told previously to be careful with less than a
full container due to the container having a large entrapped volume of air
that can proceed over time in dumping its moisture into the hardener. In an
attempt to control air circulation within the container I have taped its
breather hole, and only let it breath when I pump a mix. I do however leave
the lid off both the resin and hardener whilst I am doing glasswork, however
the room is well dehumidified. I believe smell can be an indicator of when
to turf it, but as I always wear a charcoal filtered/particle respirator, I
dont really know what "normal is". It still seems to work OK, and is only
about 1 year old, kept in a stable temperature environment. I am about to do
the tailplane skin layups so I want to solve this dilemna beforehand.
Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Regards
Tony Renshaw.
