Cheers,
The question about "where's the hinge" brings up a topic which I
haven't seen before. The question is "how do you organize all those bits?".
I got kits #1, 2 and 3 in one swell foop. Jenny and I pulled out
the various parts lists, and went through each, piece by piece, ticking off
those found. I panicked when finding 8 missing, but lo or behold - a list of
unshipped bits exactly matched the missing group.
Neighbours saved honey containers (etc) and I labelled each with
an alphabetic/numeral indicator, and we stuck the bits in the bins
accordings to first cipher. They were then arranged on a shelf - some
letters (like "m") required two bins, others managed a group of letters in
one. Big bits were stored nearby.
For a large part of the #! and 2 kits, I ticked each bit when
incorporated (subtracted no. of rivets from pack etc) AND ticked off at the
original list, too. This worked well until I screwed up a rivet - and had to
order a spare pack. By this time, most of the bits were in, and the system
has begun to fall apart...... I now have about 8,000 spare rivets of various
sizes and the lists are somewhat obscure. (1) I can maintain/replace far
more than I need, like 53 outer flap hinges,(2) there are less bits to fuss
about (the end is in sight) and (3) I can still misplace the only copy of a
vital bit only to discover it's at my elbow two weeks later.
It might make an interesting anecdotal library to hear how
others reached this peak of proficiency............
