Jonathon,

You are quite right in saying that there is room for applying " Standard
Aircraft Practice" when designing your panel when this is not specified in
the build manual. LAA leaflet TL 3.10 explains this.

However, (there is always one these, isn't there!) there are some other
things to consider.

When your panel design was initially approved by the LAA they were required
by the CAA to satisfy themselves that you had complied with the regulations
regarding the minimum instrument fit for VFR flight in accordance with the
ANO and also to check the same for engine instrumentation. Once the LAA has
approved your aircraft build the LAA then submits an Airworthiness Approval
Note (AAN) to the CAA that is the basis of approval for your initial Permit
to Fly. Technically, if you modify your aircraft so that it no longer
conforms to the condition it was in when that initial approval was granted,
you have invalidated your Permit to Fly. Hence the need for a Mods approval
system in the UK.

When fitting an EFIS the LAA will want to know that you have considered the
failure situation of a system that now relies on electrical power in order
to comply with the regulations. This requires the fitment of a standby ASI,
Altimeter and compass as a minimum.

So, the safest route is to consult LAA engineering and your inspector before
changing from a traditional six pack to an EFIS.

Brian Davies

Hi Glenn,

I did a partial panel change to install a Dynon EFIS a couple of years ago.
As far as I'm aware, changes on the panel are a matter between you and your
LAA inspector.

Best wishes.
Jonathan
