Jeroen,

Geez!!!! Rather cryptic doesn't begin to describe the manuals
statement...or rather miss-statement. I just checked the latest PDF of this
chapter and they certainly don't say 'between' sidewall to center tunnel
(though I agree..that is probably what they mean-but who could know?). In my
interpretation, they say essentially to cover the rear bulkhead (i.e.. rear
'face' only) 'from' sidewall to center tunnel. So I think someone should
change the description in the manual if we are to get out of it what seems
to be the better way to do it.

Intuitively, it makes a whole lot more sense to me, to run the 'uni' on the
front, bottom and rear faces of the gear box....than to just run it on the
rear face only. That MUST be what the manual is trying to say. It seems that
would have a tendency to strengthen up the box to lateral forces imposed
against it, of the type that might happen by the twisting of the gear legs,
when doing a landing in which the aircraft was not quite lined up with the
runway.

Thanks so much, Jeroen! If you had not spoken up, I would have done this
ply incorrectly.

Now the ugly question. How many others did not interpret the manual
correctly? Not meaning to spread fear here, as it seems the boxes have
handled a lot of abuse, and the gear legs tend to fold before the box
does....but for those that didn't interpret the manual correctly (as I would
have done), better watch those crabbed landings to get the aircraft oriented
back to centerline before touchdown! Comments? Then again, don't we good
pilots do that anyway? :)

I look forward to getting this most horrendous job of the build finished.

Regards...and thanks again,

Greg

Greg,

For your second point, the uni goes over front, bottom and rear, and to the
top of both bulkheads. The rather cryptic description in fact says it should
be BETWEEN the the two sides and NOT lapping on to them.

As far as putting the large bid in in one piece, forget it. With a lot of
force you may be able to squeeze it all in but all you will get is a heavy
ball of resin rich fibre which contributes little strength. Start on one
side, smooth it out and then you will find the bid starts bunching up on the
other side. Cut in and take one or two triangles out. Make sure the ends
overlap well and you will have a neat and structurally sound lay-up with the
fibres seated properly.

That said, it is still the most horrendous job of the build (so far..) see

Wishing you success and patience, Jeroen
