Paul,
Final dry sanding of the filler I believe was only 180 grit. I used PPG
primer which limited the sanding of the substrate to 220 grit prior to
primer application. Any finer and, as you suggest, you risk proper adhe
sion of the primer. The primer I wet sanded to 400 grit prior to paint.
  I employeed Shirwin-William's Acryli-glow and Jet-glow base coat/clear
coat which are aerospace coatings/paints. I wet sanded the color coat w
ith 400 grit prior to the application of the clear coat. The clear coat
was subsequently wet sanded with 400//600/1000/1500 grit then polished.
As you can see it was quite a lot of sanding. However, I am quite ple
ased with the results. I completed the above in 2003 and the paint looks
as good today as it did the day I sprayed it. No sanding lines or weav
e bleed through.
