Graham,
if sailplane people use a trip there are two possibilites:
* to "correct" a behaviour not intended/expected at construction time,
what _may_bring the thing up to the design L/D
* "by design" - then the airfoil deliberately was made for the use of
trips. This is possible, and nowadays rather common. But it says nothing
about the use of a trip on a "normal" airfoil.
If we could "better" an AF simply by adding a trip, life would be easy <g>-
but unfortunately it's not....
