Re the original question about Cabosil sources:
Not wanting to use this forum to promote our products, I replied directly to the
original question from Richard Iddon. However, Rowland has now been far more
open in promoting SP and our distributors (thank you Rowland!), so I've copied
part of my original message below as it gives a link to the part of the SP
Systems
website where we have some information about fillers and tables of typical
mixes. I think you can also get more silica and Expancell direct from Europa.
Hope the info at the link is of interest.

Message sent by D Cripps to Richard Iddon:
Cab-o-sil, is actually a brand name of one type of fumed colloidal silica. We
use
it in large quantities in the adhesives and coatings we make at SP Systems.
We also sell it in small packs labelled simply as 'Colloidal silica' via our
distributors in the UK. Although it is very effective at 'thickening' or
thixotroping
the resin so that it handles ike whipped cream, it doesn't reduce the
density in the way that Expancell (which are tiny plastic bubbles) does. You
actually
need a combination of the two - Expancell to reduce the density and silica
to stop it running away. The other thing to remember is that fumed silica
is the same molecular base as sand, so don't add any more than you need or else
it gets very very hard to rub down!
We have info on fillers on our website which you might find
useful:www.spsystems.com/prod-ancill.htm At this location you will see a
selection of pdf's of info on fillers from general descriptions to mix tables.
To get hold of some silica, try one of our UK distributors such as Marineware in
Southampton on 02380 330208 and tell them David Cripps from SP Systems sent
you!

Subject: Cabosil
Martin Carolan tells me that SP Systems on the Isle of Wight supply
small quantities of Aerosil or Cabosil. They have various retail
outlets around the UK and he uses a company called Marineware in
Southampton.
I should have thought of that myself as I bought my peel-ply & other
stuff from Marineware. The catalogue I have lists it as colloidal
silica, available in 1 litre packs at UK pounds 2.87 (but the minimum
order of this size is 5 packs), or a 5 litre pack at UK pounds 4.41.
(And much larger sizes for the more ambitious!)
Incidentally (at the risk of upsetting the Europa factory), I must
say I much prefer the SP mixing cups as supplied by Marineware - they
are tougher and cheaper than the ones Europa supply! Also, I keep a
sample of the mix from each layup for Martin's inspection, and I find
that after curing it just pops out of the SP cup, whereas I usually
have to destroy the Europa cup to get my sample out.
Phone Marineware on 023 8033 0208, fax on 023 8033 9667, or e-mail
<marineware@compuserve.com>.
You can also check out info direct from SP Systems on their website -
see the link on the Europa Club website <www.europaclub.org.uk>.
