Gas struts for the doors

I was wondering the same too about the "ratchet" type of stays. In the
latest issue of the AOPA magazine I noticed the new Mooney has this for
the baggage bay door. If fact the mounting is the same as what I used in
my solution to the bulging door frame . Reverse the mounting of the gas
struts. That is, I have mounted the end that normally attaches to the
fuselage to the door instead and then attached the other (upper) end of
the strut to that attaches to the lug on the door frame to fuselage.
This is how many other planes support the door. With the door closed the
force of the strut is acting on the curved surface of the door which is
very strong and not very likely to bulge. You will have to make a
bracket to secure the end of the strut to the door frame and the
clearances are tight but it does work very well and I am quite satisfied
with the end result. If the above is confusing see the AOPA article as
the principle is the same. Also the Express uses the same method which
is where I copied it from.
