It also has the advantage of not needing the accessory pad like the Whirlwind
does, freeing it up for vacuum or a spare alternator.

How much trouble is a variable pitch prop compared to a constant speed prop?
I suspect that you would just use a couple different settings - climb and 
cruise obviously.  This might actually be less trouble than a CS prop, where 
you have to pick a MP/RPM pair and set them, and then for a diffent cruise
speed do it again.
