Flying: ANR Headsets

This afternoon, I've been air-trialing a pair of active noise reduction
headsets.

I was very impressed by their ability to effectively 'mute' the Rotax
drone within
the cockpit. There's just enough noise left to enable you to detect any
engine problems.

At one point, I caught myself jollying along at 5400 rpm, a figure which
would normally
produce 'excessive' (IMHO) in-cabin noise, but this was very effectively
silenced by the
anti noise from the headsets. I had to consciously re-check the rev.
meter every few seconds
in order to set an appropriate cruise.

My trial pair were mono, and it did 'affect' the stereo music source
playing through the
intercom circuit. (base _was_ attenuated), but not in an unpleasant way.
In fact the sound
was effectively clearer, due to the absence of the familiar engine
drone.

The trial's over. I'll probably buy a pair straight away.

Unfortunately, they're not able to eliminate that familiar spinner
vibration which puts a continuous
damper on otherwise effortless flights !
