I have hit on an absolutely foolproof way of cutting out perfectly circular
inspection holes in the fuselage without risking the inadvertent chopping off
of fingers (Stanley knife).
I bought a really cheap (25 pence) set of engineers dividers and ground one
end to a chisel point. Placed the other point on the hole centre, and gently
rotated between thumb and forefinger......Thats it! The sharpened end will
cleanly cut through the fuselage skin. To prevent the the centre from boring a
hole, I usually tape on a thin piece of centre-punched alloy.
Since any inspection hole should have the inner and outer skins bonded
together ( and how many of you have NOT done that on your trim tab slots?!!!),
I use the same technique to cut out a one inch diameter larger hole (inner skin
only) than the inspection hole diameter......A neatly cut circle of bid
completes the job.
AND....since the cut is so small...I can use the circular cutout as the
inspection panel.....so no splash mouldings needed and a perfect fit
guaranteed.
