Regarding the cost v.s. an old used plane. And having some experience
(having owned two globe swifts).
First, The $350 per year will only be for one year because that it will take
me no longer than that to build it (see you at Oskosh next year).
Second, I have a quote from AVEMCO for$50,000 coverage at $1,450 per year
(not 3,500 about the same as a swift.
Third, I will keep my Europa at home saving me $2,988 in hanger costs (in my
area).
Fourth, I can do ALL my own maintenence and inspections. The annual on a
Swift is about $800 and maintainance is a lot (just try to buy a gear pump
for a swift or an elevator!!).
Fifth, I can use non-certified parts, instruments, trim systems, interiors
etc. that cost a lot less.
Sixth, Yes the purchase cost is more than say a tri-pacer (I had one of
those too) but not more than a really cool plane and the Europa is new, fast
and has a great dead grass appeal at the local airport. (the grass is
always dead around it because of all the people looking at it). And best of
all I GET TO BUILD IT, which is really very fun.
I agree that looking at all the costs makes a lot of sense and owning any
plane is expensive.
