Many thanks Duncan. Ignorance as to what is possible always widens the
parameters of panic.
Right now I feel that the ability to widen or compress pipe diameters must
rate as one of society's greatest achievements and I will certainly look

The easiest solution would be to buy a pipe expander and open up the
socket-ends to a satisfactory fit with the spigot ends.
Or take the whole to a "pipe shop", which would have that sort of equipment
anyway; the work wouldn't take them more than a few minutes.
