On departure we found we couldnt retract the gear. This is an XS mono wheel
with
975 hours.

Examination found a problem with replacement shocks we installed previously. We
repaired that problem and the gear would retract but with great effort. When
we disconnect FL20 pushrod, the wheel retracts easily.

The past two years we have found the gear difficult and there has been binding
or rubbing on the FL20 pushrod near the fuel selector. Sanding that area has
resolved the problem.

We decided since we needed to replace the pushrod with a push pull cable to gain
clearance under our revised glider wing spars and we had the parts, to remove
the pushrod and replace it with a cable.

In doing so I happened to try to raise the flaps just by pulling on the flap
cross
tube with my hands without the cable or pushrod connected but with the short
wings in place. I was surprised at how much effort was required! I could
do it but it certainly wasnt easy. Given the location of the pushrod attachment
point, I think the effort required at the gear lever is pretty high.

Has anyone ever tried doing this? How much effort is required? It seems it
shouldnt
take much effort to raise the flaps. The cross tube in the fuselage is
simple and when one works the flaps with the wings off the fuselage not much
effort is required. If this our problem, how do we find the cause?

Were open to ideas and experiences.
