Welcome to my world. I have no solutions only recommendations on what work
s for me.
Vinyl, leather, plastic and fiberglass harden with age and move with temper
ature and humidity. I=92m not impressed with any of the over the counter a
dhesives for vinyl type upholstery to plastic/epoxy.
Like any adhesive, performance it is all about the prep. All upholstery wh
ich comes loose is due to a breakdown of the bond on the aircraft skin or u
pholstery. Fiberglass does not allow a contact cement to stick to it chemi
cally so it needs a mechanical bond. Scratch the surface. Plexiglass real
ly is hard to bond to and is easily damaged by the chemicals if not tested.
I use 3M 90 with mixed results. It works for re-bonding an interior after
a fuel tank replacement. Sticks well to fiberglass that is clean and light
ly scuffed. Weldwood contact cement is fine for non foam lined fabric and w
on=92t stain on most. Industrial adhesives have limits. Some are fabric t
o metal, vinyl to vinyl and metal to rubber, but plastic to foam or vinyl i
s limited. H-66 is a nasty smelling, MEK type, highly flammable contact ce
ment that is affordable and comes in small quantities. It is pretty good f
or touchups. Also I have used a DAP product called Landau vinyl roof glue
HHR cement. I acquired the bottom of a $60 gallon and tried it on my trou
ble spot around the windscreen. It lasted a bit longer than the Weldwood a
nd 3M 90. Seems like nothing lasts longer than a year around the windscree
n. Bottom line is to pull the fabric/vinyl back from the windscreen, clean
off the old glue as best you can, scuff the fiberglass and re-glue to the
edge of the scuffed windscreen glass and it works. But then you see your p
aint line from the outside. All these glues are available on Amazon.com.
The plexiglass ( actually acrylic ) of the windscreen is the toughest glue
down of vinyl upholstery to plastic I have ever done. If the glue sticks
to the vinyl interior, it doesn=92t to the windscreen. You have to test a
round the windscreen as MEK attacks acrylic, so always test. Scuffing the
windscreen helps quite a bit on the plexi, but it is not perfect. I get ab
out 12 months before it starts coming down again. Heat is our enemy in the
southern climates.
ALWAYS TEST THE GLUE FIRST BEFORE SPRAYING OR BRUSHING AS IT CAN ATTACK SOM
E UPHOLSTERY BACKING FOAMS OR STAIN YOUR INTERIOR FABRIC OR RUIN YOU WINDSC
REEN.

Thanks so much!
On another issue, most all of the interior finishing is coming unstuck. We
have tried various adhesives, hot glue, bubble gum etc, but nothing seems
to hold. Haven=92t tried contact cement. The original adhesive was (is) a
brownish rubbery substance which no longer sticks to much of anything exce
pt to your rubber gloved fingers. Separation has occurred all around the w
indshield, cobra=85.even the insulating layer has separated in a few locati
ons from the outer shell and the vinyl is separating from the insulating la
yer. Does the vinyl shrink over time causing the vinyl pull away =85 espec
ially curved surfaces? Suggestions?

Hal Carpenter

Bud,
I=92ll take two! We have one that works fair and one not at all. This pos
t was very timely for us.
I repositioned one strut a few years ago and will do the other side when I
get the new ones.
