Generically speaking, an impedance mismatch of the microphone will cause the 
a lower transmitted sound volume. That is because the mismatch will cause a 
lower
voltage signal into the transmit input circuit.

A whine or squeal is usually the fault of a feedback loop.  Could it be that the
mike was too close to the headset speaker when you were testing it?
