Michael,
you might improve reception by taking note of the polarization of the
signal: while Aviation Radio is vertically polarized, VOR-signals are
vertically polarized.
The Europa fuselage is radio-transparent - no need to mount the antennas
externally. That further cleans up the plane.
I assume some wiring problem being the cause of your NIL-reception as
polarisation does not result in such dramatic LOS (Los of Signal).
BTW, the pilot is a small obstacle for radio waves, too. I would try to
stay away from the engine and instrument panel as there is a cloud of
noise generated.
As Paul suggests: the wingtip is an excellent choice if you can live
with one more connection to be done when mounting the wings.
