Both of these planes must have hit at quite a speed.

The tank seems of durable type.

Interesting that in the report, the number of seats in the plane was listed
as 3. I assume this is a typo.

FWIW the Hill accident report is now complete and may be read at NTSB.gov.
The NTSB ID is LAX07LA148.

Some detail about the marine aux tank is given. The 914 revealed no
possible pre-crash malfunction although that conclusion could not be
definitive due to the post-fire effect.

No probable cause was determined


BTW, while the Oshkosh incident was due to slow airspeed in the base to 
final turn, both aircraft fell from about 300 feet agl and I would not use
"slow" to describe the impact velocity and deceleration of either.
