I've heard the same thing about the Rotax tachs.  Fortunately, the 
Airmaster prop controller takes its RPM reading from the prop and 
constrains the engine according to that reading.  Or so I've been told. 
  So far (at 150hrs) the tach coincides with the factory set numbers 
(5700, 5400, 5000) set up in the prop controller.  I've also heard that 
improper adjustment of the ignition/tach pickups can cause errant tach 
readings...
