Have you pulled the plugs and looked at them? That can also tell you a
lot. Theoretically, you should pull them immediately after a high
power run with a quick engine shutdown. Practically, that makes it
tough unless you do a ground runup. I don't think you want to do a
high power climb, kill the engine, and deadstick it, huh?
I definitely don't think you should see soot buildup from a 914, just
maybe some brownish residue. Are you running autogas?
