The 2004 model R1150 RT or RS bike in the US has factory twin spark
ignition. Earlier models do not have the twin ignition. Power is up for
2004 to 98 hp. The R1100 RS and RT versions are 100 hp but the R1150 has a
wider torque curve. The following British site reps the German made
Takeoff-BMW geardrives:

The German site for Takeoff-BMW is:

On the microlight sport site, they claim a fairly complete weight with
engine, geardrive, exhaust,
airbox, and wiring about 81 kg. I have emailed Deepak at Microlight sport
and he claims with
their wiring harness that one can have an engine wired and running in an
hour (maybe on a
ultralight trike). I am considering this setup for a long postponed Avid
Catalina project.
One big issue on the beemer is the fact that the engine was designed with
the exhaust port coming out of the cylinder head on the forward side of the
bike and the intake port on the back. On a tractor configued aircraft like
the Europa, the engine is turned around with the exhaust ports to the rear.
This causes uneven cooling from the setup in the bike, causing the front
side of the cylinder to run too cool and the back side to run hot. There
also is a mandatory clutch that eliminates shaking on startup, the propeller
not starting to turn until rpms are up to 2000 RPM or so. There could be
issues with torsional resonance with the propeller, as there are only two
large pistons firing rather than four smaller ones.
The following is a list of various engines that have been tried in the
Europa, including the BMW.

The following link is an extremely interesting article with lots of pictures
on a BMW R1100S
engine in a Cherry experimental. Be sure to download the PDF article on
Rennys project
on the first page - very entertaining!

There is more conversion information at this British site for the older 80
hp R100 motors:

And this is a site where a US builder installed the older 80 hp R100 motor
on a Kolb MKIII
