The anti vibration ring may be there to prevent mechanical failure (by
fatigue) of the hydraulic connection of the sender; in which case it has
worked in your case.
Personally, my (non VDO) sender is remote-mounted (or sort-of; its
resiliently attached to the crankcase, but connected by hydraulic hose).
