I have used waste plumbing stop end females and had aluminium male plugs
made to suit(Since the slot on the top of the plug was too soft for a
screwdriver)
They also have rubber gaskets to prevent water ingress, so no hole needed
underneath, but still need to occassionally up end the tail planes to ensure
there hasn't been a leak !
The PFA saw them and I think I did drawings, they weren't happy until having
seen them because they needed to ensure that the pip pins were not simply
loose at the bottom of the hole. However I had made a flox mix to solidify
the assembly at the bottom into which I shaped a receptical for the head of
the pip pins. Down side was the cost of the aluminium caps and you must be
sure not to get any paint solvent down the threads otherwise you'll have one
hell of a time getting the caps out !!!
