Tailwheel Cables--Graham's Tailwheel Mod

I've got Graham's tailwheel mod hooked up and working. It is slick and
I get nearly 80 deg. tailwheel deflections with full rudder pedal. I
have the cables passing through the holes drilled in the base of the
sternpost layup and temporarily attached to the tailwheel horns with
kearneys, to get the proper length adjustments before finishing the
job. Here is the problem--the cables exit the drilled holes at the base
of the sternpost and rub severely on the aft lower fuselage, and have to
make about a 10 deg. angle bend on their way to the tailwheel horns. To
get a fair lead to the tailwheel, I would have to drill through the
lower fuselage skin and bond in the tubes through the lower sternpost
and fuselage skin. I'm wondering if I'm missing something, since no
mention of this tack was mentioned in Graham's instructions. Has anyone
else encountered this problem, and how have you handled it?
