I have a small number of Yuasa NPC17-12 12V 17AH sealed batteries for sale
at 28 each. A few are allocated but there are 5 left. If there is
sufficient interest I may have access to some more ex liquidated stock.
I have spoken to a technical rep at Yuasa, who told me that although they
are not directly recommended for starter batteries they do work well in this
application; he has used one in his car for a number of years without a
problem. They are certainly used in specialist applications such as F1 cars.
The main point is re-charging. To guarantee no discharge of gas on a fully
charged battery the terminal voltage should not be greater than 13.8-14.0V.
Under these conditions the gas will recombine. Over this, some venting will
occur.
